In its virtual event held on October 14, 2020, Apple officially unveiled its four new mobile devices. These included the iPhone 12 along with iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 mini.

All four devices have some innovative features that set them apart from the previous iPhone 11 series. Here’s a breakdown of the new iPhone 12 features.

1 – 5G Network

Even though Android phones have supported the 5G wireless network for more than a year, Apple recently decided to join the club. All iPhone 12 models, ranging from the iPhone 12 Pro to the iPhone 12 mini now support the 5G network.

5G on the iPhone 12 boasts higher quality video streaming, increased downloading and uploading speeds, high definition FaceTime, more responsive gaming, and much more. Moreover, the iPhone 12 series also has a Smart Data Mode which assesses 5G needs and balances data usage, speed, and power. This helps to extend its battery life.

2 – A14 Bionic Chipset

The all-new iPhone 12 Pro is powered by the A14 Bionic chipset which is the world’s first 5nm chipset. Both the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 contain this chip making the Pro and non-Pro model equally fast.

The A14 Bionic chipset has got a fast GPU, a fast CPU, and an even faster Neural Engine. According to Apple, this chipset is almost 40% more powerful than the A13 chipset used in the iPhone 11 series. It allows users to enjoy console-grade gaming experiences, along with superior battery life.

3 – Advanced Dual Camera System

The iPhone 12 features an advanced dual-camera system. It has a 12MP wide camera with an f/1.6 aperture, alongside a 12MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.4 aperture and 120-degree field of view.

With the iPhone 12 series, there’s an increased emphasis on computational photography. For instance, Smart HDR technology will allow users to capture photos with better contrast and colors. According to Apple, the iPhone 12’s camera offers a 27% improvement in low-light photography. This feature sounds impressive given that the iPhone 11 already has a very powerful low-light performance.

The phone has a 12MP front camera with an f/2.2 aperture. While, it’s not certain, but it does seem to be the same camera used for iPhone 11.

Moreover, iPhone 12 has the first camera that can shoot HDR videos with Dolby vision. In fact, it is currently the only mobile in the world that offers a complete Dolby Vision experience. This means users can now easily record, edit, and share cinema-quality videos on their iPhone.

4 – Improved Display

Like the iPhone 11 Pro, the iPhone 12 Pro will also be available in two sizes. The display on the two Pro models measures 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. The 6.1-inch screen has a Super Retina XDR display and has twice the number of pixels as the iPhone 11. Additionally, it also has a 1200-nits peak brightness, which means that you get a brighter display than the previous iPhone 11 series.

The sides of all iPhone 12 series are flat, similar to the design of the iPad Pro. Both the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro have a thickness of 7.4mm which makes it almost 10% thinner than the iPhone 11 Pro.

The iPhone 12 is going to be released in 5 different colors including Blue, Black, White, Red, and Green. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max is going to available in 4 colors including Graphite, Gold, Silver, and Blue.

5 – Increased Durability

The iPhone 12 body is made of glass. However, Apple is keen to prove that this phone is more durable than the previous iPhone series. iPhone 12 features a new technology called the Ceramic Shield to provide better protection to the screen. Apple claims that the new phones are 4 times more resistant to drops than the previous iPhone 11 series.

Moreover, the phone also has a flat surgical-quality stainless steel band on the outside. This makes it more impact-resistant than older models. Further, Apple also says that the iPhone 12’s display is more scratch-resistant as well because they use the same scratch-proof technology on the front glass as they do on the back glass.

Lastly, the iPhone 12 Pro is IP68 water-resistant to a depth of 6 meters for half an hour. This is a significant improvement from the iPhone 11’s IP68 resistance.

6 – Accessories

The iPhone 12 doesn’t include a charging brick or a pair of Apple Earbuds. Instead, Apple is only giving the USB-C-to-Lightning cable that users can use to charge their phones.

With this, Apple aims to reduce the amount of e-waste that results when a person buys a new iPhone. Moreover, the box that comes with the device is also going to be a lot thinner than the previous ones.

7 – MagSafe – Snap-on Chargers and Accessories

With the iPhone 12, Apple improves wireless charging and makes it more efficient. This significant improvement comes in the form of MagSafe. MagSafe is basically a magnet built into the phone that allows users to attach a wireless charging pad to the device.

According to Apple, MagSafe will provide 15W charging, which with Qi wireless charging on the iPhone 12 is only restricted to 7.5W. The MagSafe technology allows manufacturers to produce accessories such as leather, silicone, and clear cases that easily snap onto the back of the iPhone.

Apple stated that it will be launching its own accessories while confirming that third-part manufacturers such as Belkin have also started working on the accessories.
